Suffering Toughens a Human Heart

Mencius teaches in the Chinese traditions:

~When Heaven is about to confer a great office on someone, it first exercises that person’s mind with suffering, and his sinews and bones with toil. It confounds his undertakings. By so doing it stimulates his mind, hardens his nature, and makes good his deficiencies~
